Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools offers Driver Education classes to high school students through a private contractor; Jordan Driving School of the Carolinas (JDSC).

Driver Education is considered an after-school activity at the end of the school day.

I. Drivers Education Fee & How to Pay:

There is a fee of $65.00 which must be paid prior to Registration.
Payment of the $65.00 does not mean your student is registered for the class. Scroll down for Registration Information.

Below are the steps to pay the required fee:

Go to the K-12 payment system: https://www.k12paymentcenter.com/
Log in if you have an account or create a new account
Use the "Filters" dropdown at the top of the page to select "Driver's Education Program" in the field that says "Select a School"
Add to cart and begin the normal checkout process for a school fee payment
SAVE YOUR RECEIPT NUMBER - It is required when filling out the Registration Form.

II. NC Drivers Education Requirements:

1. Students must be 14.5 years old MINIMUM by the first day of class - No Exceptions

2. Students must attend and complete the 30-hr. classroom instruction.

-Attendance is Mandatory-

3. Students must complete the required DMV medical/vision screening offered by DMV Certified JDSC staff before they can be scheduled to drive.

- Students & Parents will be provided the schedule of our upcoming Vision Screenings during class meetings; Screenings will also be listed below as we are able to schedule them.

4. Students must complete the 6-hrs. of BTW (behind the wheel) Driving Instruction

5. Obtain the NC Driver Eligibility Form* from the school the student attends

6. Once the student completes the required 30-hour classroom portion, they are required to complete 6-hours of Behind the Wheel (BTW) driving.

- Students will automatically be added to the driving log. Assignments for driving will be oldest to youngest, class by class and could take 3-4 months.

III. Things to Consider:

Age/Grade: It is recommended for upperclassmen and students 16-18 yrs old to take earlier classes, as this will put them driving sooner rather than later. If you are a Senior, or first semester graduate please let us know. Once a student graduates in January we will be unable to complete the driving sessions.
If you turn 18 - You will not be assigned for the driving sessions until you receive the NC Permit. We will go over how to prepare for going to the DMV with you during your class. You have a limited time to get your permit. Speak to your class instructor.

All CHCCS classes will remain Online

Some Classes will be held on Teacher Work Days

If necessary, adjustments to the class schedule may be made by the Class Instructor.

Confirm your student's activity schedule NOW to avoid conflicts, attendance of the class is mandatory
